Geraldine Carol Porter

Geraldine Carol Porter, 70, Herrin, died Thursday, April 26, 2012, in Barnes-Jewish Extended Care Facility, Clayton, Mo. She was born on July 18, 1941, in Harvard, to Gordon and Alice (Wegner) Meseck. She attended a one-room school house through sixth grade and graduated from Harvard High School in 1959. She then attended Carthage College where she met and married Thomas Porter. She was a devoted mother to her four daughters. She also worked for many years as a bookkeeper, office manager at Marion Metal and Roofing, Marion Motor Freight and also for Quality Sheet Metals. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Marion, Iowa. She was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Herrin where she sang in the choir and served on the church council and as a past treasurer. She was involved in numerous organizations, including Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Franklin-Williamson County Mental Health Board and the Newcomer Alumni Association. She enjoyed her bridge and pinochle groups and enjoyed bowling, reading and traveling. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Clarence Meseck; one sister, Charlotte McComb; two brothers-in-law, Edward Magnuson and Howard McCarthy; and a sister-in-law, Beverly Meseck Survivors include four daughters, Laura (Robert) Kobrick, Nolensville, Tenn., Melissa (Mark) Morley, Carbondale, Angela (David) Janczak of Makanda and Dianna Porter, Carbondale; six grandchildren, Kaci and Abby Wooldridge, Nolensville, Tenn., and Alec, Ty, Asher and Taggart Morley, Carbondale; three sisters, Helen Magnuson, State College, Pa., Shirley and Leonard Zoellick, Litchfield, and Alice McCarthy of Marion, Iowa; and 16 nieces and nephews. A visitation was held April 29, at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home, Herrin. A funeral was held April 30, in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at 1801 Westminster St., Marion. The Rev. Mark Surburg officiated. Interment was in Linn-Hebron Cemetery, Hebron. Memorial donations may be made to Matthew McCarthy Care and Rehab Fund.
